Mamluk tile

Egypt or Syria.

Early 15th century.

A square stone paste tile freely painted in underglaze pale blue.

Two cusped cartouches occupy the centre that contain composite leafed palmettes are reserved in white against two mirror image cartouches. A detailed fish scale design makes up the background. A freely drawn meandering arabesque border in white, outlined in pale blue forms the border.
 

8.6 x 9.1 in. {21.6 x 23.1 cm}.

A square stone paste tile crisply painted in underglaze pale blue.

Two freely drawn trefoil cartouches occupy the central register which in turn are filled with trefoil leaf elements each separated by a cross hatched design all reserved against a white background.

The remaining surrounding area is filled with leaf motifs and peony designs reserved against a blue background. All contained within a thin blue border

Egypt or Syria.

Early 15th century.

Condition: Repaired. One clean break.
